What will scholars learn?

Scholars will learn one of our four custom, exclusive curricula:

What does it take to build a website? This curriculum is focused on building dynamic websites using 3 programming languages: JavaScript, HTML, and CSS. Scholars also learn the importance of responsive design, accessibility, and how to improve the UI (user interface) and UX (user experience) of a website.

WEB DEV

Artificial Intelligence plays a crucial role in today’s technology and is an integral part of our daily lives. This program empowers scholars with the knowledge to understand the fundamentals of AI while equipping them with the context to address bias as they progress in their tech careers. The AI/ML curriculum covers the foundations of artificial intelligence and machine learning with topics including algorithms, data sets, and natural language processing to train a chatbot using Python.

MACHINE
LEARNING

Everyone has a favorite app. Throughout camp, scholars will learn to code in Apple’s programming language, Swift, using the framework SwiftUI. By the end of camp, scholars will use Xcode to create fully-functioning iOS-capable mobile apps.

MOBILE APP

Data is all around us. In this curriculum, scholars examine data and draw meaningful insights through the use of SQL, Python, and data visualization tools. By the end of camp, scholars will build a visualization of a topic they are passionate about using data.

  • I’m not available to lead a full two week camp. Can I apply only for the CODE-A-BRATION opportunity?
Returning instructors can apply to solely lead CODE-A-BRATIONS in 2025. New instructors are not currently eligible to apply for the CODE-A-BRATION instructor opportunity.
  • What do scholars learn and what coding languages are taught?
In our two-week camps, scholars learn one of four curriculum options: Website Development, Mobile Application Development, Data Science, or Machine Learning. No coding experience is required for scholars, and many scholars return to participate in camp each year. Over the course of ten days, scholars work collaboratively to learn, code and apply those learnings to a capstone final project, demoed on the final day for friends and family. During our two-day CODE-A-BRATION workshop, participants will learn the foundations of several computer science concepts including Web Development and Artificial Intelligence. Like our summer offering, scholars will be given the opportunity to build a project they are passionate about using their newfound skills and demo what they have built to their peers. In all our programmatic offerings, scholars do so much more than just code: they engage in culture of technology discussions, do yoga, meditation, dance, make TikToks, build community through brain breaks, personal reflection, and group discussion. Scholars then become lifelong members and alumni of the robust Kode With Klossy network.
  • When will I find out if I’ve been selected?
Applicants will be notified of their application status on a rolling basis. All applicants will receive a final decision notification by the end of March. Due to the number of applicants, we cannot give individualized feedback on applications.
  • Do I need computer science or coding experience to apply?
While previous experience learning or teaching computer science is a plus, it is not required to apply. Kode With Klossy provides its instructors with extensive pre-service training so that they have the skills and knowledge necessary to lead our programs.
  • Are CODE-A-BRATIONS virtual or in-person?
CODE-A-BRATIONs will only be held in-person. More details about those logistics can be found on the Job Description page of the application. Reminder, only Returning Instructors are eligible to apply to lead CABs
  • Who is eligible to be a Kode With Klossy instructor?
Candidates must have a bachelor's degree, be eligible to work in the United States, Canada, or the UK and be a current or former licensed K - 12 educator. Finally, candidates must be committed to learning our coding custom curriculum.
  • When are applications due?
Applications are due by 11:59 PM ET, January 8th, 2025. Applicants are encouraged to set aside 1-2 hours to complete the application.
  • What does the instructor hiring process look like?
New instructors are selected based on an application, an interview, and a professional reference. Returning instructors will be selected based on their performance in previous summers, an application, and a technical task submission. The most important qualities we are looking for are mission-alignment, leadership, flexibility, equity-mindedness, dependability, and collaboration.
  • What commitment do I need to make to Kode With Klossy camps?
Ideally, for camps, instructors are able to commit to 2 camp placements (i.e. 4 weeks) over the summer. It is expected that you are able to work for the full two weeks (10 days) of each camp, as well as be available the week prior to prepare for your camp. You will be expected to complete training in the spring in advance of your camp - more information can be found in the job description.
  • Are summer camps virtual or in-person?
In the summer of 2025, camps will be held both virtually and in-person in specific locations across the United States.
  • What commitment do I need to make to teach in Kode With Klossy CODE-A-BRATIONs?
Returning Instructors interested in leading CODE-A-BRATIONS (CABs) should ideally be available to lead at least two of these programs. CAB instructors can expect to go through several weeks of virtual training, followed by one evening of in-person prep the day before the event. CODE-A-BRATIONS take place over the course of two full days and typically occur on weekends (Saturday and Sunday plus Friday evening prep).
  • How will I be compensated?
Kode With Klossy offers competitive compensation for completing training and leading programs. More information can be found in the job descriptions included within the application portal.
  • How does Kode With Klossy place instructors into camps?
During the application process, applicants will be able to indicate their availability to teach in specific locations, modalities, and time periods. If selected, our team will use the information provided to match each instructor to specific camps.
  • What is the selection process for IAs? When will I hear if I have been selected?
New IAs are selected based on an application followed by an interview. The most important qualities we are looking for are mission-alignment, leadership, flexibility, equity-mindedness, dependability, and collaboration. Returning IAs will be selected based on their performance in previous summers, an application, and a technical task submission. Applicants will be notified of their application status on a rolling basis. All applicants will receive a final decision notification by the end of March.
  • Who should apply as a returning IA?
Anyone who has served as an IA at Kode With Klossy summer camps in previous summers should apply as a "returning IA." If you have only served as CAB IA previously, you should still apply as a “New IA” but feel free to mention your experience as a CAB IA in your response to questions on the application.
  • Can I apply to be a scholar and an IA? Can I be a scholar after I've served as an IA?
Once you've been a Camp IA you can no longer be a scholar. If you have not attended camps across all of our curricular offerings, we encourage you to consider exhausting all curricular options before applying to become an IA. That said, if you still choose to apply to be an IA but ultimately are not selected, you can then apply to be a scholar. If you have previously served as a CAB IA but have not yet served as a Camp IA as long as you still meet the other requirements (18 or under) you can still apply to be a scholar in camps this coming summer!
  • Is this program virtual or in-person?
In 2025, summer camps will be held both virtually and in-person in specific locations across the United States. CODE-A-BRATIONs will only be held in-person and will occur throughout the spring, summer, and fall.
  • How will I be compensated?
Kode With Klossy offers competitive compensation for completing training and leading summer camps. More information can be found in the job applications linked above.
  • Who is eligible to be a Kode With Klossy Instructor Assistant?
The Instructor Assistant position is available to anyone who has attended a Kode With Klossy summer camp. Kode With Klossy alumni who have only attended a non summer program (ex. CODE-A-BRATION or Campus workshop) are not yet eligible to serve as instructor assistants. New IA applicants must be 18 years or older by April 1st 2025 OR have exhausted all four Kode With Klossy curricular offerings. If you are still under 18 and have not attended camps across all of our curricular offerings, we encourage you to do so before applying to become an IA. Alumni who are still eligible to participate in our programming as a scholar are not eligible for the IA position.
  • What commitment do I need to make to KWK Programming?
For camp placements, ideally, IAs are able to commit to 2 camp placements (i.e. 4 weeks) over the summer. It is expected that you are able to work for the full two weeks (10 days) of your camp, as well as be available the week prior to prepare for your camp. We will ask for your summer availability as part of your application. You will be expected to complete training in the spring in advance of your camp - more information can be found in the job description. IAs interested in leading CODE-A-BRATIONS (CABs) should only expect to lead one of these programs if CABs are brought to your local area. In the Spring and Fall CABs will occur on several weekends (Saturday and Sunday) with an in-person prep evening the day before (Friday). In the Summer CABs will still span two days with scholars and one evening of prep but may occur during the week as well as on some weekends.
  • How does Kode With Klossy place IAs into camps?
During the application process, applicants will be able to indicate their availability to teach in specific locations, modalities, and time periods. If selected, our team will use the information provided to match each IA to specific camps.
  • I’m not available to lead a full two week camp. Can I apply only for the CODE-A-BRATION opportunity?
Yes! IA applicants are able to indicate that they are only available for CAB placements. You will also be able to indicate if you are available for placement in the Spring, Summer, Fall, or some combination of all three.
