Kode With Klossy Summer 2024 Overview
 

Kode With Klossy is a technical skills-based community for young women and gender expansive youth. We create learning experiences and curate opportunities. Our programs ignite a spark that fuels our scholar’s agency to pursue their passions, educations, and careers in a tech-driven world. We are a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that relies on a network of high-quality teachers, partners, and advocates who help us tackle the persistent gaps in gender and racial representation in the technology industry.

Our signature program is our 2-week summer coding camps, with both in-person and virtual options in four curricula:

• Website Development

• Mobile App Development

• Data Science 

• Machine Learning
   

In the summer of 2024, camps will be held in two-week sessions, from June 3 - August 2, 2024.

The Opportunity 

​

The Kode With Klossy team is excited to welcome back returning instructors to lead our coding camps in the summer of 2024! As a returning instructor, you bring a unique mindset, technical expertise, and experience that is invaluable to our programming.
 

• Instructors can expect to lead 2 camp sessions over the course of the summer. Throughout the application process, applicants will indicate the dates and modalities for which they are available and the Kode With Klossy team will assign them camp placements. 

• We attempt to recruit local instructors and place instructors locally whenever possible. In cases where travel is necessary, all related expenses for travel, food, and accommodation will be covered by Kode With Klossy. 

• All returning instructors can also apply to serve as a senior instructor during the training experience. Read more below on the responsibilities for this role. supporting other instructional leaders throughout pre-service training
   

Responsibilities
 

The following outline the responsibilities of a Kode With Klossy instructor, from the training experience to the facilitation of summer camps.
 

Training 
 

Instructors will engage in a comprehensive training model designed to equip them with the technical and institutional knowledge they will need to confidently lead camps. Paid, pre-service training begins in March and ends in May 2024. Returning instructors can expect to spend a total of about ~30 hours total on training tasks. The training responsibilities are as follows: 
 

• Establish an effective self-paced schedule to ensure successful completion of all training tasks

• Review all assigned lessons, activities, and projects in curriculum and internalize curricular changes from previous years

• Gain, practice, and apply instructional skills relevant to camp modality and role

• Become familiar with the logistics and systems used to facilitate camps 

• Attend 2-3 synchronous meetings led by the Kode With Klossy team 

• Complete all assigned training deliverables and share updates as appropriate with training cohort and senior instructor

• Support new instructional leaders throughout training by sharing best practices and modeling excellent instruction 

• Maintain consistent communication with Kode With Klossy staff 
   

Camp Prep 
 

Ahead of the first day of camp, each instructor is expected to collaborate closely with other members of the instructional team to: 
 

• Establish team working norms and expectations

• Internalize lessons, divide responsibilities, and customize learning materials 

• Become familiar with camp modality and/or location specific protocols and setup needs (i.e. navigating Zoom tools, optimizing classroom layout, etc.) 

• Engage in 1:1 check-in with a member of the Kode With Klossy team 

• In any instructional teams where you are the only returning instructor, share best practices, provide context and insight, and uphold Kode With Klossy’s mission and vision

Camp Facilitation 
 

• Teach scholars, alongside an instructional team consisting of one co-instructor and instructor assistants 

• Collaborate daily with instructional team to analyze scholar feedback, plan for instruction, and make adjustments in response to scholar data

• Manage instructor assistants as they lead community building moments, practice activities, and execute on logistical tasks 

• Monitor and assess scholar understanding of the coding skills outlined in curriculum, adapting lessons as necessary to support all scholars

• Foster a dynamic, engaging, and supportive learning environment that keeps the scholar experience centered in all decision making 

• Communicate regularly with all Kode With Klossy staff throughout the duration of the program and follow all escalation procedures for any issues that arise during the program

• Demonstrate poise, professionalism and exceptional communication skills

• Coordinate with Kode With Klossy team, location hosts, and partners (when applicable) to ensure logistics run smoothly (i.e. integration of special activations, compliance with building security protocols, etc.)

• Curate a classroom environment that will be conducive to learning and community building
   

Qualifications 
 

Requirements
 

• Taught at least 1 Kode With Klossy camp

• Current or former credentialed K-12 teacher

• Eligible to work in the United States 

• Bachelor’s Degree 
   

Preferred Experiences 
 

• Experience teaching middle or high school students 

• Experience teaching computer science or related STEM topic 

• Experience in academically diverse and culturally responsive classrooms 

• Proficiency in at least one of the following programming languages: HTML, CSS, Javascript, Python, Swift or knowledge of a comparable language

Compensation
 

Instructional leaders are compensated for their work during training, preparing for camp, and facilitating camp. Our compensation structure is designed to honor a continued commitment to the Kode With Klossy community. As such, instructor compensation increases when instructors lead additional camps and when they return to lead future summer programs.
 

• Training Stipend: Returning instructors will receive $1000 as a stipend upon completion of all required training tasks in the spring.

• First Camp: For the prep and facilitation of their first camp, returning instructors will receive $3150. 

• Additional Camps: For any additional camps, instructors will receive $3,450 for prep and facilitation. 

• Most returning instructors will receive two camp placements and, as a result, can expect total compensation of $7600 for the 2024 summer commitment.
   

Senior Instructor Role & Responsibilities 
 

In the summer of 2024, all returning instructors can optionally apply to serve as a senior instructor. Senior instructors work alongside the Kode With Klossy team during training to support instructional leaders. If you are interested in this role, please be sure to answer the Senior Instructor specific questions when completing your application. 
 

Senior Instructors will work closely with the Kode With Klossy team and their responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
 

• Complete synchronous training in early March to prepare for the role 

• Guide a cohort of instructors or instructor assistants in completing training tasks and becoming well-versed in the Kode With Klossy curriculum and camp culture 

• Respond to instructional leader questions, host study halls, and offer differentiated support for instructional leaders when needed

• Keep track of instructional leader progress and training task submissions 

• Support in the facilitation of synchronous training sessions, including sample teaches and curriculum review sessions

• Provide feedback on the design of the instructional leader training experience 

• Collaborate and share updates with a KWK team member in monthly 1:1 check-ins 
   

Senior Instructor Compensation 
 

Senior Instructors will receive a training stipend of $1750 for their work in the spring training experience. Their compensation for facilitating and leading camp is detailed above in the returning instructor compensation.
