Kode With Klossy Summer 2024 Overview
Kode With Klossy is a technical skills-based community for young women and gender expansive youth. We create learning experiences and curate opportunities. Our programs ignite a spark that fuels our scholar’s agency to pursue their passions, educations, and careers in a tech-driven world. We are a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that relies on a network of high-quality teachers, partners, and advocates who help us tackle the persistent gaps in gender and racial representation in the technology industry.
Our signature program is our 2-week summer coding camps, with both in-person and virtual options in four curricula:

In the summer of 2024, camps will be held in two-week sessions, from June 3 - August 2, 2024.
The Opportunity
Instructor Assistants are Kode With Klossy alumni who serve as peer leaders and instructional supporters in summer camps.

Instructor Assistants (IAs) play a pivotal role in ensuring camp logistics run smoothly and making sure that scholars are getting individualized support while learning new skills.
-
IAs help scholars navigate their coding journey, develop confidence in their newfound skills, and bring lots of fun, energy, and inspiration to the classroom.
-
IAs can expect to lead at least 2 camp sessions over the course of the summer. Only instructor assistants who are 18 or older by the start of training in March 2024 will be placed in in-person camps. The Kode With Klossy team will assign camp placements, using information that applicants share about their availability.

We attempt to recruit local IAs and place IAs locally whenever possible. In cases where travel is necessary, all related expenses for travel, food, and accommodation will be covered by Kode With Klossy.
Responsibilities
The following outline the responsibilities of a Kode With Klossy Instructor Assistant from the training experience to the facilitation of summer camps.
Training
IAs will engage in a comprehensive training model designed to equip them with the technical and institutional knowledge they will need to confidently lead camps. Paid, pre-service training begins in March and ends in May 2024. IAs can expect to spend a total of ~30 hours on training tasks. The training responsibilities are as follows:

Establish an effective self-paced schedule to ensure successful completion of all training tasks

Review all assigned lessons, activities, and projects in curriculum and internalize curricular changes from previous years
-
Gain, practice, and apply instructional skills relevant to camp modality and role
-
Become familiar with the logistics and systems used to facilitate camps
-
Attend 2-3 synchronous meetings led by the Kode With Klossy team
-
Complete all assigned training deliverables and share updates as appropriate with training cohort and senior instructor
-
Maintain consistent communication with Kode With Klossy staff
Camp Prep
Ahead of the first day of camp, each instructor assistant is expected to collaborate closely with other members of instructional team to:

Establish team working norms and expectations
-
Internalize the plan for each camp day, divide responsibilities, and customize learning materials
-
Become familiar with camp modality and/or location specific protocols and setup needs (i.e. navigating Zoom tools, optimizing classroom layout, etc.)
Camp Facilitation
-
Support Kode With Klossy summer instructors throughout camp with lesson delivery, classroom management, community building, and logistics
-
Collaborate daily with instructional team to analyze scholar feedback, plan for instruction, and make adjustments in response to scholar data
-
Monitor and assess scholar understanding of the coding skills outlined in curriculum, adapting lessons as necessary to support all scholars
-
Foster a dynamic, engaging, and supportive learning environment that keeps the scholar experience centered in all decision making
-
Communicate regularly with all Kode With Klossy staff throughout the duration of the program and follow all escalation procedures for any issues that arise during the program
-
Demonstrate poise, professionalism and exceptional communication skills
-
Coordinate with Kode With Klossy team, location hosts, and partners (when applicable) to ensure logistics run smoothly (i.e. integration of special activations, compliance with building security protocols, etc.)

Curate a classroom environment that will be conducive to learning and community building
Qualifications
Note: For New IAs, priority selection will go to applicants who have exhausted all Kode With Klossy curricular offerings and/or are 18 years or older. If you are still under 18 and have not attended camps across all of our curricular offerings, we encourage you to do so before applying to become an IA.
Required Qualifications

Attended and completed at least one Kode With Klossy summer coding camp as a scholar

Kode With Klossy alumni who have only attended a non summer program (ex. code-a-bration or Campus workshop) are not yet eligible to serve as instructor assistants.

Eligible to work in the United States or Canada

In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States or Canada and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire. Preferred Experiences
The following are not required to serve as an instructor assistant, but are a plus.

Pursuing or holding a bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field

Previous participation in similar computer science experiences

Teaching or mentoring experience with middle or high school students

Compensation
Instructional leaders are compensated for their work during training, preparing for camp, and facilitating camp. Our compensation structure is designed to honor a continued commitment to the Kode With Klossy community. As such, compensation increases when IAs lead additional camps and when they return to lead future summer programs.

Training Stipend: New IAs will receive $600 as a stipend upon completion of all required training tasks in the spring.

Camp Prep: For the work done to prepare in advance of camp, new IAs will receive $180 for each camp they lead.

First Camp Facilitation: For the facilitation of their first camp, new IAs will receive $1500.
-
Additional Camp Facilitation: For the facilitation of any additional camps, new IAs will receive $1650.
-
Most new IAs will receive two camp placements and, as a result, can expect total compensation of $4110 for the 2024 summer commitment.
